What's On > (1) SWANSEA JAZZ CLUB WEEKLY @Cu Mumbles
Trumpeter Tomos Williams brings his band of brilliant musicians to Swansea Jazzland for the first time to play the music of jazz legend Miles Davis.
The band will play some of the classics associated with the great trumpeter: Milestones, Joshua, All Blues but also feature some of the less well known songs from Miles' vast catalogue such as Masqualero and Fran Dance.
Tomos Williams is a leading and unique voice on the Welsh jazz scene. Heavily indebted and influenced by Miles' music ,7Steps is a natural project for Tomos to front. He also leads the jazz/folk sextet 'Burum', the Indo-Welsh fusion band 'Khamira', and his groundbreaking jazz project 'Cwmwl Tystion', which deals with Welsh history and culture.
Miles was one of the towering figures of 20th Century music and '7Steps' will present his music with vigour and passion.
7Steps have toured Wales in 2018 and 2023, and their concerts paying homage to Miles Davis and his music are always popular. Get your tickets early for a night of swinging jazz and burning solos.
Williams guides the band, and he stalks the stage half-proud father and half-explorer in a new, dangerous, but familiar land. His horn is beautifully controlled, pulling soloists back to the root of the number, springboarding them off. – Wales Arts Review
Tomos, from Aberystwyth, is a unique trumpeter in Wales who straddles both the folk and jazz worlds. He has played internationally since the early 2000s. Tomos has worked with Melvin Gibbs (USA), Nguyên Lê (France), Soweto Kinch (UK), Orphy Robinson (UK), Huw Warren (Wales) and Rhodri Davies (Wales) as part of his Cwmwl Tystion project and his 'Riot! Suite' was nominated for an Ivor Novello Composers Award in 2022.
As well as leading Khamira he also leads the Welsh jazz/folk band 'Burum' and 'Cwmwl Tystion / Witness' a three part deep dive into Welsh culture and history including world renowned musicians.
He presents a jazz radio show on BBC Radio Cymru (the National Welsh Language radio station for Wales), and he is Chair of 'Jazz Explorers Cymru' - a grass roots organisation set up to promote jazz within and outside of Wales.
